DURBAN - India will retain the No.1 ranking on the ICC Test match table regardless of the outcome of the ongoing three-match series against South Africa.

It comes after India won the second Test at Durban’s Kingsmead on Wednesday by 87 runs with well over a day to spare.

The result enabled the M.S. Dhoni led-team to square the series at 1-1.

Only a 3-0 series win for South Africa would have moved the No.2 ranked Proteas to the top of the standings.

The countries now face a series-deciding match at Cape Town’s Newlands Cricket Ground, starting on January 2.

According to Sport24, India will not put their status as the No. 1 Test side on trial again until they travel to England in July.

South Africa’s next Test engagement is at home against Australia at the start of the 2011/12 season. (ANI)
