New Zealand beat Kenya by 10-wickets in World Cup Group A opener

CHENNAI - New Zealand claimed an emphatic 10-wicket victory in their opening World Cup match against bowling Kenya on Sunday.

Kenyan captain Jimmy Kamande won the toss and chose to bat first at Chennai’s M.A. Chidambaram Stadium, but they collapsed from 40 for one to 69 all out in 23.5 overs.

lack Caps fast bowler Hamish Bennett took four out of Kenya’s first five wickets to finish with match figures of 4-16 from five overs.

Tim Southee and Jacob Oram cleaned up the lower order with three wickets each.

Only three Kenyan batsmen - Seren Waters (16), Collins Obuya (14) and Rakep Patel (16 not out) - managed double digit scoresew Zealand’s opening batsmen Martin Guptill and Brendon McCullum had no problems in the run chase, using just 48 balls to achieve the target.

Guptill hit two sixes and five fours in a 32-ball unbeaten 39, while McCullum scored 26 not out from 17 balls.

New Zealand’s next Group A match is against Australia at Nagpur on Friday. (ANI)
