PCA to build new stadium in near Chandigarh

MOHALI - The Punjab Cricket Association (PCA), which owns a world-class stadium here, is all set to come up with another modern cricket stadium at Mullanpur village near Chandigarh.
“We have decided to build a cricket stadium of international standards spread over 40 acres in Mullanpur village. This would be completed within two-and-a-half years. Then we will shift the matches to the new venue,” PCA president I.S. Bindra told reporters here Wednesday.
“We have many problems at the Mohali stadium like traffic management and parking during matches. The Mullanpur stadium will take care of all such problems,” he added.
The PCA stadium in Mohali, about 10 km from Chandigarh, was built in 1992. The new stadium will be only 3 km from Chandigarh.
The PCA authorities are now busy refurbishing the Mohali stadium infrastructure to host the World Cup matches.
The PCA will host its first 2011 World Cup match March 3 between South Africa and the Netherlands.
The second match March 11 is between the West Indies and Ireland and one of the semifinal matches will be played under floodlights March 30.
Talking about the recent controversy about the PCA not getting no-objection certificate from the fire department, Bindra said: “Our present NOC will expire in October. We have made some alterations in the wake of World Cup matches and we will take the NOC for them in the next two three days.”
