Tainted Pak pacer Asif also files appeal against ICC’s seven-year ban

ISLAMABAD - Disgraced Pakistan pacer Mohammad Asif has followed the route taken by former teammate Mohammad Amir and contested the seven-year ban imposed on him by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on spot-fixing charges.
On February 5, an independent Anti-Corruption Tribunal appointed by the ICC to hear into the spot-fixing case imposed a sanction of seven years ineligibility, two years of which are suspended “on condition that he commits no further breach of the code and that he participates under the auspices of the Pakistan Cricket Board in a programme of Anti-Corruption education.”
Sources close to Asif confirmed to PakPassion.net that he has indeed sent an appeal against the ICC ban to the International Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) based in Switzerland.
The appeal to the CAS by Asif was widely expected, and he will be hoping that the court overturns the ban or reduces the term of the ban to a minimum.
Asif had earlier expressed his intention of appealing against the ban, saying: “I’m bitterly disappointed with the verdict that was announced in Doha. I am determined to totally clear my name and to get back to what I love doing and that is playing cricket for my country.”
The CAS will be the final authority on the matter and both parties will have to accept its judgement in the case. (ANI)
