San Jose slips past Real Salt Lake

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — San Jose forward Cornell Glen scored in a 2-1 win over Real Salt Lake on Saturday that ended the Earthquakes’ losing streak at five.

Arturo Alvarez tallied on a 30-yard strike to the upper corner and Michael Zaher added a pair of assists for San Jose (2-7-2), which hadn’t won since March 28.

Robbie Findley scored in the 80th minute to end Real’s scoreless streak at a league-high 350 minutes, but RSL (3-6-2) dropped to 0-5-1 on the road.

Glen had been absent from MLS since 2006 and was playing in his native Trinidad & Tobago until joining San Jose on Tuesday. He made his Earthquakes debut a day later as a second-half substitute in a 2-1 loss at Columbus.

Making his first start, Glen made all the difference Saturday. After coming close to scoring twice in the first half, including a strong header that required a diving save from RSL goalkeeper Nick Rimando, Glen broke through in the 52nd minute, running free onto a cross from Zaher and slipping his header between Rimando and the near post.

Alvarez scored 11 minutes later.

San Jose, which came into the game tied for the league’s third-worst offense with only 10 goals, kept the pressure on Rimando for much of the game. Rimando dropped down to make a point-blank save on Ramiro Corrales’ header in the 26th minute, while Clint Mathis cleared a Ryan Johnson shot off the line in the 85th.

The Earthquakes looked like they would get their first shutout of the season until Javier Morales sprung Findley loose with a nice pass on the left side.

San Jose keeper Joe Cannon preserved the win with a leaping left-handed stop to turn aside Yura Movsisyan’s injury-time blast.
