Quaranta, Moreno spark United past Red Bulls 2-0
WASHINGTON — Santino Quaranta scored in the 36th minute and Jaime Moreno converted a stoppage-time penalty kick to help D.C. United defeat the New York Red Bulls 2-0 Thursday night.
Josh Wicks, starting his third straight match, made five saves for his second shutout in that span for United (4-2-7). His best save was a diving stop in the 86th minute to push Juan Pablo Angel’s effort around the left post when the score was still 1-0.
Jon Conway made three saves for the Red Bulls (2-8-3), but took down Christian Gomez on a late breakaway to set up the penalty kick.
Moreno then sealed New York’s third straight loss with his MLS-leading 126th career goal.
Quaranta scored after United’s best play of the first half. Ange N’Silu and Luciano Emilio each headed the ball forward to find Fred on the right, and the Brazilian drove in a low cross onto the foot of the sprinting Quaranta, who side-footed it in from 5 yards.
Emilio, United’s leading scorer, received a red card from the bench moments after being subbed off in the 63rd minute, and will be suspended for D.C.’s home match against Chicago on June 13.
The Red Bulls, who have lost three straight and are winless in their last four matches, have not won a game at RFK Stadium since October of 2005.
