Tottenham, West Ham, Hull confirm games in Beijing
BEIJING — Tottenham, West Ham and Hull will take part in the Barclays Asia Trophy in Beijing next month.
Beijing Guoan, one of China’s top teams, is the fourth team in the two-day tournament.
The participation of the English Premier League clubs was confirmed Wednesday.
“It is a great opportunity for fans from China to get to come and watch their favorite players in action,” Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp said in a statement.
Redknapp managed Portsmouth in the 2007 edition of the event in Hong Kong. Malaysia and Thailand had also previously hosted.
“It was a great few days in terms of preparation for the new season and I was really impressed with everything,” Redknapp said. “It’s a terrific competition and well organized. Everything was first class.”
The event will bring West Ham manager Gianfranco Zola back to Beijing for the first time since he coached Italy at the 2008 Olympic Games. Italy lost to Belgium in the quarterfinals.
“This preseason, and the matches we play in China, are going to be very important for us because it will allow us to prepare for the new season in the right way,” Zola said.
The games will be played on July 29 and July 31 at the Workers Stadium in central Beijing, where 49,000 tickets will be on sale for each match.
