Movsisyan, Borchers lead Salt Lake past Galaxy
CARSON, Calif. — Yura Movsisyan and Nat Borchers scored to lead Real Salt Lake to a 2-0 victory over Los Angeles on Saturday night, ending the Galaxy’s 10-game unbeaten streak.
Goalkeeper Nick Rimando made five saves for his third shutout as Salt Lake (4-6-3) posted its first road win and stopped a seven-game winless streak.
The Galaxy (2-2-9) suffered their first loss since a 3-2 defeat to Colorado on April 4. Los Angeles played without Landon Donovan, who joined the U.S. national team for World Cup qualifying and the FIFA Confederations Cup in South Africa.
Movsisyan scored his second goal in two games in the 13th minute. He took a pass from Clint Mathis, faked defender Gregg Berhalter to the right and sent a 9-yard shot that ricocheted off goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts’ palms.
Borchers made it 2-0 in the 51st minute. Mathis’ pass off Javier Morales’ corner kick deflected off Galaxy midfielder Eddie Lewis to Borchers, who converted from 7 yards.
Borchers’ goal was his first since 2004, when he played for the Colorado Rapids.
Rimando made three saves in the first 15 minutes to keep the Galaxy scoreless. He punched away Omar Gonzalez’s 6-yard header with both fists in the 7th minute. Then in the 15th, Rimando deflected Dema Kovalenko’s 18-yard shot before blocking Lewis’ attempt to convert the rebound.
Real Salt Lake defender Jamison Olave headed Lewis’ 14-yard header off the goal line in the 58th minute.
The Galaxy played with 10 men after Lewis received a red card in the 65th minute.
