RUSTENBURG - Ghana made Africa proud Saturday by defeating the United States 2-1 in Rustenburg to reach the quarter-finals of the World Cup in South Africa thanks to an extra-time cracker from Asamoah Gyan.

The only African side left in the tournament enjoyed a dream start to their match in Rustenburg as Berlin-born Kevin Prince Boateng put the Black Stars ahead after just five minutes.

But US midfielder Landon Donovan scored the equalizer from the penalty spot in the 62nd, leaving the sides locked at the end of regular time.

Gyan then resolved the match just three minutes into extra time by controlling a deep cross with his chest and sending a left-footer flying past US keeper Tim Howard.

It was Gyan’s third goal of the tournament after two penalties, and arguably his most important.

The Black Stars now meet Uruguay Friday.
