TEL AVIV, Israel — Israel’s Harel Levy has upset Russia’s Igor Andreev 6-4, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 to give the hosts a 1-0 lead in their best-of-five Davis Cup quarterfinal matchup.
The 210th-ranked Levy scored Israel’s first victory in a Davis Cup quarterfinal, defeating the 24th-ranked Andreev at the Nokia Arena in Tel Aviv on Friday.
Israel’s top player, Dudi Sela, will take on Mikhail Youzhny in the second match of the day as Israel attempts to make the Davis Cup semifinals for the first time.
Russia has made it to the semifinals in each of the past five years, winning the competition in 2002 and 2006.
Israel has only reached the quarterfinals once before, being beaten 4-0 by India in New Delhi in 1987.
