Sao Paulo,BRAZIL - Former boxing world champion Arturo Gatti has been found dead in a hotel room in a Brazilian tourist resort.
Police said the body of the 37-year-old former super-featherweight and light welterweight champion was discovered in his room at the north-eastern resort of Porto de Galinhas Saturday.
The Italian-born Canadian had arrived at the resort Friday with his Brazilian wife and a year-old son.
A police spokesman said investigations were going on and the cause of death was unclear.
A spokeswoman for the state public safety department said Gatti’s wife and son were unhurt.
“There were no bullet or stab wounds on his body, but police did find blood stains on the floor,” she said.
Gatti was IBF super-featherweight champion in 1995 and WBC light-welterweight champion in 2004, losing the belt 18 months later to American Floyd Mayweather Jr. He retired in 2007.
