Michael Campbell withdraws from British Open
TURNBERRY, Scotland — The struggles continue for New Zealand’s Michael Campbell.
The 2005 U.S. Open champion withdrew from the British Open during the second round on Friday because of a shoulder injury, the fifth time this year he’s dropped out of a tournament.
Campbell opened with an 8-over 78 — only three players were worse — and he left the course Friday after a bogey at No. 12 pushed his score to a staggering 21 over. He had a quadruple-bogey 7 at the sixth and a pair of double bogeys.
Campbell has plummeted in the world rankings since winning the U.S. Open at Pinehurst. This year, he has missed the cut 11 times and withdrawn from his other five events.
