Defending Gastein Ladies champ upset in 2nd round

BAD GASTEIN, Austria — Magdalena Rybarikova of Slovakia upset defending champion Pauline Parmentier of France 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 Wednesday in the second round of the Nuernberger Gastein Ladies.

Parmentier served 10 double faults, while the sixth-seeded Rybarikova had seven aces.

Rybarikova, who won her first WTA Tour title in Birmingham in June, plays either No. 3 Sybille Bammer or Ioana Raluca Olaru in the quarterfinals.

Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan routed No. 9 Shahar Peer of Israel 6-2, 6-1, and Austria’s Yvonne Meusburger defeated Tatjana Malek of Germany 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 to also advance.
