Cornet rallies to beat Mayr at Bad Gastein
BAD GASTEIN, Austria — Top-seeded Alize Cornet of France rallied to beat Patricia Mayr of Austria 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 Thursday in the second round of the Gastein Ladies.
The 28th-ranked Cornet did not win a point on her second serve in the opening set but quickly found her rhythm to win back-to-back matches for the first time on the WTA Tour since February.
Cornet will play Barbora Zahlavova Strycova in the quarterfinals, after the Czech routed Nuria Llagostera Vives of Spain 6-0, 6-3.
Earlier Thursday, Ioana Raluca Olaru of Romania upset third-seeded Sybille Bammer 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 to reach her third quarterfinal of the season.
The 22nd-ranked Austrian, who won her second WTA Tour title in Prague last week, double-faulted seven times and missed all nine break points in the deciding set.
Fourth-seeded Iveta Benesova of the Czech Republic withdrew against Germany’s Andrea Petkovic citing a thigh injury after having lost the first set 6-1.
