Paes leads Washington to 1st WTT championship
WASHINGTON — The Washington Kastles have won their first World TeamTennis Pro League championship, beating the Springfield Lasers 23-20 on Sunday night.
The Kastles were led by Leander Paes, the league’s male MVP, who teamed with Scott Oudsema to win the men’s doubles and with Rennae Stubbs to win the mixed doubles. Paes owns nine Grand Slam championships, five in men’s doubles and four in mixed doubles.
Oudsema beat Springfield’s Raven Klaasen in men’s singles, while Washington’s Olga Puchkova defeated Vania King, the league’s female MVP, in women’s singles.
King and Liezel Huber beat Stubbs and Puchkova in women’s doubles.
The Kastles started their second WTT season 0-4, but a late surge put them in the playoffs.
