Starlarks rallies from last to win Del Mar feature

DEL MAR, Calif. — Starlarks rallied from last in a field of 10 3-year-old fillies to win by a nose in Saturday’s $150,000 San Clemente Handicap at Del Mar.

Ridden by Alex Solis, Starlarks was 10th for the first half of the turf mile, moved up to fifth by the top of the stretch and charged home six-wide to edge out Strawberry Tart and win in 1:33.82.

Starlarks, an Irish-bred trained by Paddy Gallagher for Dolantori Racing, paid $24.60, $9.80 and $5.60. Strawberry Tart paid $3.80 and $3.20. Hameildaeme paid $7.20 to show.

The favorite, Carlsbad, led in the early going but faded to fifth.

It was the fourth victory in 14 starts for Starlarks. She earned $90,000 for a total of $171,237.
