Angel out with concussion

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — New York Red Bulls’ leading scorer Juan Pablo Angel did not play Wednesday night in the CONCACAF Champions League match against W. Connection FC of Trinidad and Tobago because of a concussion in last week’s match.

According to Dr. Riley Williams, the team’s medical director, Angel suffered a Grade II concussion during the match last week, which ended in a 2-2 tie against the same opponent.

“He did suffer a period of unconsciousness during the game,” Williams said before the match. “Our medical staff examined him this morning and decided it would be best to keep him from playing for at least this game.”

Williams would not say how long Angel would be out for the Red Bulls, who have Major League Soccer’s worst record at 2-15-4. Angel is the team’s leading scorer with seven goals.

It was the second concussion Angel has had in his three-year career with the Red Bulls.
