Scott Hamilton to skate again in Ohio benefit
CLEVELAND — Olympic gold medalist Scott Hamilton plans to make his first skating performance after more than 12 years this November as part of a benefit for the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio.
The 51-year-old Hamilton was diagnosed with testicular cancer in 1997 and with a non-cancerous brain tumor in 2004. He received treatment for both at the clinic.
Hamilton told The Plain Dealer newspaper that the tumor inhibited his desire and ability to skate and he had to re-learn simple skating maneuvers, such as skating backward. He said he is back on track and will start working on his signature move — the back flip.
Hamilton won the gold medal in 1984.
