Ajmal fined for gesturing at Sangakkara during T20 match

COLOMBO - Pakistan off-spinner Saeed Ajmal has been fined for his misconduct on the cricket field during a Twenty20 match against Sri Lanka.

Following a post-match hearing, match referee, Alan Hurst, found Akmal guilty of breaching the International Cricket Council’s code of conduct and fined him 15 percent of his match fees.

“This type of action cannot be tolerated as it does not promote the playing of the game in the expected positive spirit,” Hurst said.

Akmal had showed fingers to Sri Lankan captain Kumara Sangakkara after rattling his stumps in the T20 match on Wednesday, which Pakistan won by 52 runs.

A statement released by Hurst said Ajmal could have been heavily penalized for his unnecessary action had he not apologized to both on-field umpires.

“In coming to my decision, I took into account the fact the player immediately recognised his error of judgment and apologised to both umpires.He also did so to Kumar Sangakkara after the game,” The News quoted Hurst’s statement, as saying. ANI)
