Cantwell wins shot put at worlds
BERLIN — Christian Cantwell of the United States has won the shot put title at the world championships by beating Olympic champion Tomasz Majewski of Poland.
Ralf Bartels earned the first medal for host nation Germany with the bronze.
Cantwell won with a throw of 72 feet, 3 inches, the best of the season, overtaking Majewski on the fifth of six attempts. The Pole took silver with a throw of 71-10¾ and Bartels threw 70-1½. Defending champion Reese Hoffa of the U.S. was fourth.
Cantwell was second to Majewski in Beijing last summer.
