Jockey faces cocaine charges in upstate New York
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. — Jockey Norberto Arroyo Jr. has been charged in upstate New York with possessing and intending to sell cocaine after he was found with about 12 grams during a traffic stop.
Police in Saratoga Springs say the 33-year-old from Winthrop, Mass., was pulled over Sunday morning a few blocks from Saratoga Race Course. That’s where he has been riding during the six-week racing season that began July 29.
Police say that Arroyo was stopped for not wearing a seat belt and that he’s also charged with driving with a suspended license.
He was arraigned on two felony drug charges and ordered held in the county jail on $25,000 bail. Police say they don’t know if he has a lawyer.
The New York State Racing and Wagering Board suspended Arroyo’s racing license after the arrest and set a hearing for Friday.
