Unheard South Korean golfer stuns Woods to win US P. G. A.

CHASKA - Y E Yang, an unheard of South Korean golfer electrified the golfing world on Sunday, by stunning World No 1 Tiger Woods to win the US P.G.A. Championship.

Yang beat Woods at the Hazeltine National by shooting a two-under-par 70 in the final round to win the championship with a score of eight-under 280.

Woods finished three strokes back after a final-round 75, while Lee Westwood and Rory McIlroy were tied for the third spot at 285.

Following the win, the 37-year-old became the first Korean man to win one of golf’s four major championships and he was also the first golfer to overtake Woods in a major championship in which Woods had the lead going into the final round.

Yang was exuberant as he holed the birdie putt, he broke into a brief victory dance, punching the air and with both fists, raising his arms over his head and high-fiving his caddie.

“You never know in life, this might be my last win as a golfer. But this is a great day. It’s going to be a great foundation for me to continue playing on the PGA Tour. It means the world right now. It hasn’t sunken in, but I do know the significance of it,” The New York Times quoted Yang, as saying.

Yang took the lead at the 14th hole with a 75-foot pitch for eagle while on the final hole, he hit a towering shot from 197 yards with a hybrid club to set up his closing birdie.

However, Woods, whose achievements to date rank him among the most successful golfers of all time, was more angry about his putting than anything else.

“I hit the ball so much better than my score indicates. I hit it great all day, and just didn’t make anything. I played well enough to win the golf tournament, but I did not putt well enough to win the golf tournament. It was just a bad day at the wrong time, and that’s the way it goes,” Woods said. (ANI)
