US women’s team to hold camp
CARSON, Calif. — Veterans Abby Wambach, Heather O’Reilly and Hope Solo were among 26 players invited to the U.S. women’s two-week training camp next month to prepare for a trip to Germany to face the World Cup champions.
Coach Pia Sundhage invited 23 players who played in the inaugural season of the WPS professional league. The other three invitees are seniors in college.
The U.S. women currently sit atop the FIFA world rankings and have a record of 6-0-1 in 2009, having scored 11 goals while allowing just one. That goal came in the championship game of the prestigious Algarve Cup, where the Americans eventually lost to Sweden on penalty kicks.
The roster:
Goalkeepers: Nicole Barnhart, Ashlyn Harris, Hope Solo.
Defenders: Brittany Bock, Rachel Buehler, Lori Chalupny, Stephanie Cox, Amy LePeilbet, Heather Mitts, Megan Schnur, Cat Whitehill.
Midfielders: Yael Averbuch, Shannon Boxx, Tina DiMartino, Tobin Heath, Angela Hucles, Brittany Klein, Lori Lindsey, Carli Lloyd, Heather O’Reilly, Leslie Osborne, Megan Rapinoe, Kacey White.
Forwards: Lauren Cheney, Amy Rodriguez, Abby Wambach.
