Coach: Sex tests not explained to SAfrican runner
JOHANNESBURG — The coach of the South African runner being tested to confirm her sex says he’s resigning over the way she was given gender tests without explanation.
South African media said Monday that coach Wilfred Daniels resigned from the national track authority out of remorse over the treatment of runner Caster Semenya.
Daniels told South Africa’s Talk Radio 702 Semenya was tested at a South African clinic before winning the 800 meters event at the world track championships in Berlin last month. He says “the tests were not properly explained to her.” He did not say if results had been determined.
Other South African track officials say Semenya was never tested in South Africa.
