On Monday night Djokovic won over Radek Stepnek and then challenged the legendary John McEnroe to a little match, in the 2009 US Open. The packed audience witnessed an excellent match between the star of yesteryear and a tennis player among the recent crop.
It is interesting to note that when, in the 1980s, McEnroe was dominating the world of tennis by winning 17 Grand Slams, out of which there are three Wimbledons and four US Opens, Djokovic was still not born. “Superbrat” McEnroe, as he was famously known because of his unpredictable and uncontrolled temper on tennis court, is twenty eight years older to Djokovic.
Djokovic was born in 1987 in Serbia, yet being so young he is still very serious about the game. Like any other youngster of today’s times he also likes to have fun. This fact was also very evident from the spirit of the match between him and McEnroe. Djokovic enjoyed this fun encounter and it was evident all throughout the match.
After Djokovic had won his match against Stepnek he at first challenged Todd Martin, his friend, to a little fun game. But when Martin declined Djokovic challenged McEnroe. McEnroe had been actually appointed as one of the announcers of the match and was in his place in the broadcast booth when Djokovic challenged him. McEnroe immediately took up the challenge and went down to face Djokovic. It was actually a treat for the packed audience present at the stadium.
The match brought back the memory of McEnroe’s famous 1980s catch phrase, “You Cannot Be Serious”, when both Mcenroe and Djokovic entertained the audience and grabbed their attention just for the sake of fun at the Flushing Meadows.

When they ask me where I am from, I usually say “From Serbia; not Siberia, and certainly not Syria”. Some people may get offended, but obviously
some need the clarification….
Nice article. Thanks.
