IN track quarantines 59 horses amid disease fears

ANDERSON, Ind. — Fifty-nine horses have been quarantined because of a suspected contagious infection at Hoosier Park racetrack in central Indiana.

Hoosier Park officials placed the horses in quarantine Saturday after one thoroughbred at the stable began exhibiting signs of streptococcus equi, or strangles, a contagious bacterial disease common in horses that can be life-threatening.

All 59 horses will remain quarantined at the Anderson track until test results are available.

Hoosier Park did not say whether the quarantine would cause changes in its racing schedule. Its next live races are scheduled for Wednesday.
