Retired Bahamas sprint star charged with sex crime

NASSAU, Bahamas — Retired sprint champion Andrew Tynes of the Bahamas was charged with sexually assaulting a 16-year-old boy who was a student at the school where he taught gym.

The 37-year-old track star was charged during a hearing Wednesday with indecent assault on a minor last month. Tynes is due back in court Monday, when a trial date is expected to be set.

He has denied wrongdoing and was released after posting $6,000 bond. His lawyer, Ramona Farquharson, declined comment Thursday and calls to Tynes’ home went unanswered.

Tynes has been placed on administrative leave from C.C. Sweeting Senior High School. School administrators did not return calls Thursday.

Tynes, a 200-meter specialist, won gold medals at the 1993 Central American and Caribbean Games and the 1993 Central American and Caribbean Championship. In college, he dominated NCAA meets as a star for UTEP.
