British cycling team Sky to join Pro Tour races
AIGLE, Switzerland — British cycling squad Team Sky has been accepted to race in the International Cycling Union’s Pro Tour calendar of events.
But Lance Armstrong’s new Radio Shack team must wait to see if it can join.
The UCI says Friday it had granted a new license to Team Sky for the 2010-2013 seasons and extended French team Ag2r La Mondiale for the next three seasons.
The UCI says it would decide on other applications “in the near future.”
Starting in 2011, a Pro Tour membership will give teams an advantage in entering the Tour de France and Giro d’Italia.
The Pro Tour included 14 stage races and one-day classics this year. It will add the Grand Prix of Quebec and Montreal next season.
