Coyotes hire King as assistant coach
GLENDALE, Ariz. — The Phoenix Coyotes hired Dave King as assistant coach on Monday, raising questions about Wayne Gretzky’s future behind the bench.
The club said that King would assist associate coach Ulf Samuelsson, who has been serving as interim head coach as the bankruptcy court battle over the team’s sale has dragged on.
In a related move, the Coyotes said Sean Burke would replace Grant Fuhr as goaltending coach, with Fuhr moving to director of goaltender development.
The 61-year-old King is a 35-year coaching veteran. He was the head coach of the Calgary Flames from 1992-95 and the Columbus Blue Jackets from 2000-03, compiling a combined record of 173-182-52 in the regular season.
