Portsmouth soccer club misses 3rd salary payment

PORTSMOUTH, England — Portsmouth’s players are still waiting for their wages after the soccer club missed payments for the third time this season.

Portsmouth is last in the Premier League at 4-14-2 and was forced to negotiate a short-term loan to overcome cash-flow problems. The club has told the players’ union the already-postponed payments should be made Wednesday.

Because of tax owed, government officials have filed a petition against the club, which has had three different owners since the start of the season. A hearing is scheduled Feb. 10 but Portsmouth is contesting the case.

Because of the debts, the league has imposed a transfer ban on the club.
