Chapman says food, language are tough adjustments

GOODYEAR, Ariz. — Cincinnati Reds pitcher Aroldis Chapman says his toughest adjustment since defecting from Cuba has been getting used to the food and the language.

The Reds signed the hard-throwing lefty to a six-year, $30.25 million deal last month. He’s getting a chance to make the starting rotation in spring training, though the Reds say they’re going to be patient and not rush the 21-year-old.

The Reds had a media availability with Chapman on Monday. He doesn’t speak English, so minor league pitching coach Tony Fossas served as translator.

Chapman said it was very difficult to leave his wife, daughter and the rest of his family behind when he defected.
