SYRACUSE (GaeaTimes.com)- West Virginia managed to make their way to the Final Four of the NCAA Basketball Tournament for the first time in almost fifty years. The last time that they had gone up to the Final Four was way back in 1959. However, this time, West Virginia managed to beat Kentucky at a score of 73-66, a whopping and very significant victory no doubt, considering that Kentucky was being hailed as the number one seed for this tournament. A lot of the credit for this victory, however, goes to Joe Mazzulla.
Joe Mazzulla will have a lot to remember about this game held between West Virginia and Kentucky. For one, this would be the first time in a long time that he had started a game, for the first time in this entire season, and for the first time since he underwent a major surgery that has still left him weak in the hands. Moreover, he was a lot responsible for leading the team to an unexpected victory against the top ranking Kentucky. Joe Mazzulla also notched up 17 points in the game, the highest that he has managed to score in his career so far.
After the game was over, Joe Mazzulla commented that he was grateful to be given the chance of taking part in the game at all, considering that his throw was still considerably weak, not having completely recovered from the surgery that he underwent a few days back. He felt that instead of taking him into the team as an active member, coach Bob Huggins might just have benched him. However, Joe Mazzulla was allowed to play when his replacement went off the roster due to a broken foot, and it paid off well.
