Olympic boxing champion Bohumil Nemecek dies at 72
PRAGUE — Bohumil Nemecek, an Olympic champion boxer who competed for Czechoslovakia at the 1960 Rome Games, has died, the Czech Boxing Association said. He was 72.
Jan Pavlik, the secretary general of the Czech association, said Nemecek died Sunday after being hospitalized with a long-term illness. The cause of the death was not given.
Born on Jan. 2, 1938, in the town of Tabor, Nemecek won the gold medal in the light-welterweight division at the 1960 Olympics. He became the European champion seven years later.
Nemecek will be buried Friday in the northern city of Usti nad Labem, where he had lived.
