Marchena equals record of 49 unbeaten games
INNSBRUCK, Austria — Spain defender Carlos Marchena has matched Brazil great Garrincha’s record of 49 straight games without defeat when Spain beat Saudi Arabia 3-2 in a World Cup warmup.
Marchena, not a regular starter for the European champions, came on as a substitute for Sergio Ramos in the 61st minute Saturday.
The Valencia defender has played 57 times for Spain, and could set the new undefeated record on Thursday when Spain plays an exhibition against South Korea in Innsbruck, Austria.
