PORT OF SPAIN - South Africa beat West Indies by one wicket in the fifth ODI at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain to complete a 5-0 sweep in the series.
Chasing 253 for victory, Hashim Amla (45), Jacques Kallis (57) and J.P. Duminy (51) provided the momentum for South Africa’s response, but a late collapse gave the home side hope of victory.
However, in the final over South Africa’s last man Lonwabo Tsotsobe lashed the fourth delivery from Kieron Pollard past the infield to the extra cover boundary to reach the target with two balls to spare.
West Indies captain Chris Gayle led the home bowling attack, taking 2-38 from 10 overs, while Kieron Pollard grabbed 2-42, The Sydney Morning Herald reports.
Earlier, Shivnarine Chanderpaul’s 67 and 53 from Narsingh Deonarine had helped the West Indies side to a total of 252 for 6.
Chanderpaul also shared crucial partnerships with the Bravo brothers, Darren (17) balls and Dwayne (26).
The experienced left-hander put on 51 off 83 balls with left-hander Darren, then 41 off 58 deliveries with Dwayne.
Deonarine, with assistance from Pollard (25) and Darren Sammy (19 not out) lifted the tempo in the closing stages. (ANI)
