Earthquakes edge Union on goal by Alvarez

CHESTER, Pa. — Arturo Alvarez scored in the 91st minute to lead the San Jose Earthquakes past the Philadelphia Union, 2-1, on Saturday.

Cornell Glen also scored for the Earthquakes (6-4-4), who won for the first time since May 22. San Jose had been 0-2-3 in its last five matches.

Fred scored for the Union (3-8-2), who lost for the first time at home this season. Philadelphia was 2-0-1 in three previous home matches — one at PPL Park, its new stadium, and two at Lincoln Financial Field, home of the Eagles.
