Everton ralles to tie United; Barcelona upset
LONDON — Manchester United conceded two stoppage-time goals to draw 3-3 at Everton, while Chelsea maintained a perfect start to its title defense by beating West Ham 3-1 in the Premier League on Saturday.
United led 3-1 in the 90th minute even without Wayne Rooney, who was given a day off against his former team amid newspaper reports about his private life. But Tim Cahill sparked Everton’s comeback with a headed goal and Mikel Arteta had time to score an equalizer.
Chelsea won its fourth straight with little resistance at West Ham, which is still without a point after four matches. Michael Essien netted Chelsea’s first goal after two minutes and headed in its third in the 83rd. West Ham goalkeeper Robert Green spilled Didier Drogba’s 30-yard free kick in the 18th minute, and when Matthew Upson tried to clear the loose ball it caromed off Salomon Kalou and over the head of Green for the second goal.
Arsenal is two points behind Chelsea in second after routing Bolton and American midfielder Stuart Holden 4-1, while big-spending Manchester City was held to a 1-1 draw by Blackburn to collect only one point from its last two matches.
Tottenham was held 1-1 by West Bromwich, as was Sunderland at Wigan, while Blackpool won its second match since being promoted, prevailing 2-0 over fellow newcomer Newcastle.
Fulham’s 2-1 victory over Wolverhampton came at a cost, with Bobby Zamora breaking his right leg in a hard challenge by Karl Henry, an injury that will sideline the English forward for at least four months.
Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard had made two excellent saves in the first half.
“The goalkeeper was fantastic today, I think the goalkeeper was probably the difference,” Everton manager David Moyes said.
After diving one way, Howard lifted his trailing leg to knock away a deflected shot by Paul Scholes in the 32nd minute. Five minutes later the American used a wrist to tip a 12-yard effort by Ryan Giggs over the crossbar.
“The first half we dominated and we should have went in 1-0,” Howard said. “Obviously they got the goal and in the second half they were powerful and went over the top of us. But we had spirit and we had fight and we got the point, which was important.”
In Fulham’s win, American forward Eddie Johnson replaced Clint Dempsey in the 83rd minute, Johnson’s first Premier League appearance since last Oct. 4.
FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — Javier Pinola converted a late penalty to clinch a 1-1 draw for Nuremberg at Hamburger SV, while Bayer Leverkusen rallied from a two-goal deficit to draw 2-2 at 10-man Hannover in the Bundesliga.
Stuttgart fell to its third straight defeat, 2-1 at Freiburg, and Wolfsburg also remained without a point after falling 2-0 at Borussia Dortmund.
Greek striker Fanis Gekas, who retired from international soccer this week, scored twice in Eintracht Frankfurt’s 4-0 win at Borussia Moenchengladbach, which started American midfielder Michael Bradley. Ricardo Clark was a 90th-minute sub for Frankfurt.
Hoffenheim sent Schalke to its third loss with a 2-0 victory on Friday and now has nine points after three wins in three games.
Bayern Munich hosts Werder Bremen later Saturday.
GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) — Kenny Miller scored in the 90th minute to maintain Rangers’ perfect start to its Scottish title defense with a 2-1 victory at Hamilton, and Celtic also went to 4-0 by overcoming Hearts 3-0.
Miller has scored in each of the defending champion’s four league matches.
Croatia striker Nikica Jelavic headed in his first Rangers goal in the sixth minute, but teammate Madjid Bougherra turned the ball into his own net 50 minutes later. American midfielder Maurice Edu played the entire game.
James Forrest put Celtic ahead in the 28th by knocking in Daryl Murphy’s cross from close range.
Shaun Maloney scored a second in the 44th. In second-half stoppage time, substitute Paddy McCourt beat three players before sending the ball over goalkeeper Marian Kello.
MADRID (AP) — Defending La Liga champion Barcelona lost its first Spanish league home game since May 2009 when Nelson Valdez scored in each half to give promoted Hercules a 2-0 victory.
The Paraguayan forward beat Victor Valdes in the 27th minute, then latched on to Tiago Filipe’s centering pass from a swift counterattack in the 59th.
Valdes and Javier Marscherano, who made his Barcelona debut, were among six Barcelona starters and two substitutes who were in Buenos Aires on Tuesday for Argentina’s 4-1 exhibition win over Spain. Barcelona has three points from two league games.
Hercules won 3-2 in 1996-97 during its previous match at Camp Nou. Former French forward David Trezeguet was in Hercules’ starting 11 after joining from Juventus.
“A complicated year awaits us,” Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola said. “We’ll need to pick ourselves up now.”
Real Madrid rebounded from an opening draw at Mallorca to beat Osasuna 1-0 in Jose Mourinho’s first home game as Madrid coach. Ricardo Carvalho shot into an open goal in the 48th minute after receiving a pass from Cristiano Ronaldo.
ROME (AP) — Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Robinho made their debuts for AC Milan as the Rossoneri were stunned 2-0 by freshly promoted Cesena.
Ibrahimovic started but hardly made an impact and Robinho replaced Ronaldinho in the 56th minute, after Erjon Bogdani scored in the 31st and Emanuele Giaccherini in the 44th for Cesena, which was playing its first Serie A home game in 19 years.
Ibrahimovic punctuated the poor performance by smacking a penalty kick off a post in the 86th.
In another surprise, 10-man AS Roma lost 5-1 at Cagliari. Samuel Eto’o knocked in a rebound of his own penalty kick in the 67th as five-time defending champion Inter Milan beat Udinese 2-1. Lucio put Inter in front seven minutes in when goalkeeper Samir Handanovic couldn’t handle a corner kick from Wesley Sneijder, and Antonio Floro Flores equalized for Udinese in the 31st, beating Lucio to head in a cross from Antonio Di Natale.
In its previous two matches, Inter lost the European Super Cup 2-0 to Atletico Madrid and was held to a scoreless draw by Bologna in its Serie A opener.
Inter, Cesena and Cagliari lead with four points each.
On Tuesday, Inter opens defense of its Champions League title at Dutch side FC Twente.
