Saaniya opens seven-shot lead in Hero Honda women’s golf

GURGAON - Saaniya Sharma shot the only sub-par round on the opening day of the fifth leg of the Hero Honda Women’s Professional Golf Tour of India.
Saaniya, who was second behind Sharmila Nicollet in the second and third leg of the Tour, opened up a seven-shot lead over Sharmila, who had a 77, at the end of the first day.
Saaniya’s 70 was the big bright spot on a day when the next best was 77.
On the course, most players were having difficulty in reading the run of the ball near to the green.
Sharmila was one over after 13th and then dropped five shots on the 14th to finish at five-over.
Saaniya was the only one to shoot a fine two-under card, returning a day’s total of 70.
Despite heavy rains overnight, the course was in fairly good shape, thanks to the course management team.
The first round had to be pushed back as players’ arrived late at the course due to heavy traffic.
