MELBOURNE - Greg Norman has been named as the most influential person in Australian golf over the past 40 years.
Norman beat a host of big-name golfing personalities to win the honour including Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Jack Newton, Kerry Packer and Karrie Webb.
To mark its 40th anniversary, Australian Golf Digest has profiled the 40 most influential people in Australian golf since 1970.
Norman transcended the game in Australia, inspiring a whole new generation of players during a brilliant career, which included two British Open triumphs and a decade as world No.1.
Norman (55) still remains one of Australia’s highest-earning sports stars, continuing to earn millions annually from his many and varied off-course ventures, The Age reports.
“Very few sportspeople have built empires as an extension of their on-field accomplishments,” Australian Golf Digest declared.
“Aside from the twin claret jugs and 80-plus worldwide victories, Norman’s business interests now take in golf-course design, wine, turf, beef and event management, to name but a few,” it said.
Newton, who is unofficial considered as godfather of Australian golf, was listed as the second most influential figure of the past 40 years. (ANI)
