PCB may sue Brit paper for ‘baseless’ claims against players following ICC ‘all clear’

KARACHI - Following the International Cricket Council’s admission that it had no ‘compelling evidence’ of match-fixing in the third one-dayer against England, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is mulling initiating legal action against the British newspaper that had leveled those allegations against the Pakistan cricketers.

According to sources, the PCB is in consultation with its British lawyer Elizabeth Robertson about its intention to start legal action against ‘The Sun’ for making baseless accusations against its players, the Daily Times reported.

The newspaper had claimed that bookies were aware of a ‘certain scoring pattern’ in the One-day International between Pakistan and England played at Oval on September 17, which the visitors won by 22 runs. Subsequently, the ICC had announced a probe into the same last month.

While Pakistan ODI skipper Shahid Afridi had termed the allegations as ‘rubbish’, PCB Chairman Ijaz Butt had claimed that it was “a conspiracy to defraud Pakistan cricket”.

However, earlier this month, the ICC admitted that no evidence had been found to substantiate the match-fixing allegations against any of the Pakistani cricketers. (ANI)
