DHARAMSALA - A town near Dharamsala in Himachal Pradesh is all set to paly host to the ‘Jaypee Twenty20 Maha Sangram’ (Jaypee Twenty20 Grand Tournament), which will see the participation of a record 1300 teams.
The tournament will start on November 13 in the town of Kalpa.
It will be the second season of the tournament, organised by the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA), is expected to see the participation of about 1300 teams and 18000 players.
The first season, played in 2009, saw the participation of 14,500 players from 1,017 teams. Matches were played across 57 venues in the state. The idea is to take the sport to the remotest area in Himachal Pradesh.
“Our motive is to make the sport of cricket reach even to the remotest area. The awareness about the sport should grow. We want youth in villages not to consider cricket just a game of bat and ball, but understand the finer technicalities of the game. This will allow the youth of the state to hone their interest in cricket and do well professionally in it. And eventually bring glory to the state and the nation,” said Sanjay Sharma, Spokesperson, HPCA.
Now, the HPCA will try its best to match the criteria required to set a world record through this tournament.
“We have got in touch with both Limca Book of Records and the Guinness Book of Records. Committee of both will be following us closely. We will give our best to match the criteria required for making world record,” said Sharma.
The tournament’s semi finals and final matches will be played under flood lights in Dharamsala’s cricket stadium. And the cash prize worth 30 lakh INR (67,347.60 USD) will be presented to the winning team. Along with that, each member of the quarter-finalists’ team will receive a set of cricket kit. (ANI)
