Spot-fixing scandal: London police submits more evidence

LONDON - London’s Metropolitan Police has handed over more evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) in the alleged spot-fixing scandal during the fourth cricket Test between Pakistan and England at Lord’s in August.

A second file of evidence was submitted to CPS Friday claiming Pakistani cricketers Mohammad Aamer, Mohammad Asif and Salman Butt were bribed by suspected bookie Mazhar Majeed for under-performing in the Test.

“The Metropolitan Police has today delivered a second file of evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service in connection with the investigation of alleged offences in relation to the fourth Test at Lord’s Cricket Ground Aug 26. The file will now be subject to CPS consideration,” The Guardian quoted a Metropolitan Police spokesman as saying.

Earlier, the detectives interrogated four Pakistani players and arrested Majeed as part of the inquiry. Majeed is accused of accepting 150,000 pounds to fix moments during the fourth Test.

The inquiry will continue, the spokesman confirmed.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) upheld the provisional suspension of Aamer and Butt and dismissed their appeals against it last Sunday. Asif earlier decided to withdraw his appeal.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) followed it up by suspending the tainted trio’s central contracts.
