RANCHI - The men’s hockey semifinal between Jharkhand and Maharashtra at the 34th National Games was halted due to unruly crowd behaviour here Wednesday.

The crowd threw empty water bottles on the ground when the referee awarded a penalty stroke against the home team. The scoreline was 0-0 at the time.

The players were seen arguing with the three field referees who upheld the decision.

A section of the crowd did not take take the ruling sportingly and started pelting water bottles on the field. Officials and Jharkhand captain Vimal Lakra tried to control the crowd but the effort went in vain.

The match is likely to resume Thursday.
