LONDON - Ace striker Wayne Rooney, whose form has not been up to the mark since the World Cup, produced a moment of stunning skill in the 78th minute of Manchester United’s clash with rivals City at Old Trafford.

He hailed the goal that kept United on top of the Premier League as his greatest ever.

Rooney’s sensational goal, scored with a soaring overhead kick, gave United a 2-1 victory.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson declared it the greatest goal he had ever seen at Old Trafford, and compared it to the great Denis Law’s legendary strikes for the club.

Rooney agreed, claiming it as his greatest hit. “That’s definitely my best goal ever,” The Daily Mail quoted him, as saying.

“To score such an important goal and to score it in that way was a great feeling. I scored with an overhead kick like that when I was at school but to be fair I don’t think I’ve scored one since I started playing professionally, so I’m delighted,” Rooney said.

Agreeing with Rooney’s analysis, Ferguson said: “I don’t think I’ve seen a better one here at Old Trafford. Rooney hit that volley against Newcastle six years ago with the same ferocity. We’ve had some classic goals here but in terms of execution, you’ll never see anything like that.”

“It was reminiscent of Denis Law although I’m not so sure that Denis ever put them in with such ferocity,” he added. (ANI)
