Wigan clears Steve Bruce for move to Sunderland

WIGAN, England — Wigan has given manager Steve Bruce permission to consider taking over as Sunderland’s new coach.

Wigan said Monday it has agreed on a compensation package to release Bruce from his contract.

The former Manchester United defender is the favorite for the job at Sunderland. Ricky Sbragia resigned as Sunderland manager on the final day of the season after keeping the Black Cats in the Premier League.

Bruce came to Wigan from Birmingham in November 2007.

It’s now up to Sunderland and Bruce to reach agreement on personal terms.
