Chardy, Soderling advance at German Open
HAMBURG — Robin Soderling and Jeremy Chardy, who both won tournaments last week, extended their winning streaks on clay Wednesday to advance to the third round of the German Open.
Soderling, who won his home Swedish Open in Bastad on Sunday, outlasted Fabio Fognini of Italy 6-3, 6-7 (3), 6-3. The third-seeded Swede has an 18-3 record since May, with all three losses coming against top-ranked Roger Federer, including in the French Open final.
Chardy had 21 aces to prevail over Andreas Beck of Germany 7-6 (2), 7-6 (6). The Frenchman, who is seeded 15th after moving up to a career-high ranking of No. 32, saved a set point before squandering three match points as Beck sent the second set to another tiebreaker.
Second-seeded Nikolay Davydenko of Russia swept past Philipp Petzschner of Germany 6-3, 6-2 and No. 6 David Ferrer of Spain beat another German, Florian Mayer, 6-3, 6-2.
Chardy produced two straight aces to set up his fourth match point and won the encounter when Beck sent a backhand long.
“I have a lot of confidence, I played my best tennis last week,” said Chardy, who won the tournament in Stuttgart for his first career title. “The court was different though and it was hard to play well. But I served very well indoors.”
The match was played under the closed canvas roof of the center court because of rain, which delayed play on outside courts.
Victor Hanescu, the 11th-seeded Romanian who lost the Stuttgart final to Chardy, advanced with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Jan Hernych of the Czech Republic.
