Austrian lab eyed in doping investigation
VIENNA — Staff at a World Anti-Doping Agency laboratory in Austria have been questioned by police investigating the supply of banned drugs to athletes.
Officials say Thursday the lab near Vienna is one of 35 WADA-accredited labs worldwide.
Guenter Greiner, head of the lab, says “we are most interested in clearing up possible allegations against employees and former employees.”
The interrogations were sparked by Stefan Matschiner, the disgraced ex-manager of cyclist Bernhard Kohl, who was arrested in March for allegedly playing a role in a nationwide doping scandal.
Matschiner was named by Kohl and retired triathlete Lisa Huetthaler as their supplier of performance-enhancing drugs. Matschiner was released from custody in May but is expected to face charges.
