Fire rally from two down, stun Rapids 3-2

BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. — Dasan Robinson scored in second-half injury time to cap the Chicago Fire’s three-goal rally in 18 minutes for a 3-2 win over the Colorado Rapids.

Robinson’s header from 6 yards beat Matt Pickens to the left side of the net for the Fire (10-5-8), who trailed 2-0 in the 58th minute after a pair of goals by Rapids striker Omar Cummings in a 10-minute span.

Though he was already on a yellow card, Robinson celebrated the winner by taking his jersey off and getting himself a red, but the Rapids (8-7-6) were unable to find a late equalizer to salvage a point.

Cuauhtemoc Blanco started the comeback by converting a penalty in the 72nd minute before Mike Banner tied the match at 2 with a 16-yard shot in the 85th.

Chicago moved within one point of Columbus for the Eastern Conference lead, while Colorado remained fifth in the West, nine points behind Houston.

Cummings gave the Rapids a two-goal lead with a thunderous left-footed shot from 20 yards that beat Fire goalkeeper Jon Busch to the upper right corner for his eighth goal.

In the 48th, Cummings collected the rebound of a shot parried by Busch near the penalty spot and easily scored into the lower right corner.

Blanco earned his penalty in the 71st minute, getting tripped in the area by Kosuke Kimura. He ripped a shot to the lower left corner by Pickens to make it 2-1.

Banner, who came on as a substitute, drew the Fire even at 2 in the 85th minute. The Rapids failed to clear a corner kick out of the penalty area and the ball rolled to Banner, who dribbled inside the 18-yard box on the left and ripped a shot that beat Pickens to the upper right side of the net.
