Revolution assistant Mariner resigns

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — New England Revolution assistant coach Paul Mariner has resigned to pursue a coaching position abroad.

Mariner’s resignation is effective after the Revolution’s game against the Chicago Fire on Saturday night.

Mariner spent six seasons with the Revolution. During his tenure, New England advanced to the MLS Cup three times and played in the Eastern Conference title game four times.

Mariner, from Bolton, Lancashire, England, was considered among the best forwards in English football in the late 1970s and early ’80s. He was a member of England’s World Cup team in 1982.
