Plushenko wins Grand Prix gold in Moscow
MOSCOW — Evgeni Plushenko of Russia has won gold at the Rostelecom Cup, finishing with a soaring free skate.
Takahiko Kozuka of Japan took silver and Artem Borodulin of Russia won bronze. American Johnny Weir had an error-filled program that dropped him to sixth in the free skate and fourth overall.
Plushenko did only one quad but it was solid, combined with a triple toeloop. Plushenko chose tango music that gave him the opportunity for challenging stop-start moves during the step sequences.
Weir was in trouble from the opening seconds, when his planned toeloop was replaced with a triple flip. He doubled two subsequent triple axels and needed time to rise from his ending kneeling position.
